A row over funds set aside for two child stars of Slumdog Millionaire was fuelled by a warning given to their families to stop demanding upscale homes and cars.

The trust fund allotted to Rubiana Ali, 10, and Azharuddin Ismali, 11, is hanging in the balance after claims filtered out of India that the children are truants.

The Oscar-winning movie’s director, Danny Boyle, was reported to be furious that the children were able to skip school when he flew out of India.

Their parents, meanwhile, were allegedly claiming a lump sum of £31,000 each child received to get them out of the poverty of Mumbai was not sufficient for houses with pools.

Boyle has instructed the childrens’ families to enforce school attendance or face the loss of cash.

A spokesman for the trust, Noshir Dadrawala, said: “Danny has said that if they don’t agree by January, the money will be given to other charities.”
