Angelina Jolie says refugee work ended her “self-destructive” years

Angelina Jolie credits working with refugees for ending her alarming "self-destructive" years.

When Jolie first hit the spotlight, she was known for her bizarre behaviour, bragging of a love for fetishism, using drugs and swapping blood with lovers.

But she now says that her behaviour was sparked by a "suffering" she felt she had – a suffering she realised was nonsense once she started meeting people going through extreme hardship.

Jolie – who insists she is "extremely happy in this time of my life" – says she now wishes she could have found a love for working with refugees earlier.

"I think it would have got me through my youth easier – I would have been less self-destructive," she admitted. "When you see people that have suffered things that you will never, ever know, you know how lucky you are."

Jolie is determined to bring up her six children with a constant involvement in her work in the third world.

"There’ve been refugees since the dawn of time and I’m sure my children will be visiting and learning from refugees in the future," she said.

"I hope if I raise them with a more accurate view of the world than I was raised with, then they will naturally be better people."
